[Transcript] The One Percent Show: Annie Duke

Annie Duke is author, corporate speaker, and consultant in the decision-making space. She is also a special partner focused on decision science at First Round Capital Partners, a seed-stage venture fund. For two decades, Annie was one of the top poker players in the world. In 2004, she bested a field of 234 players to win her first World Series of Poker bracelet. The same year, she triumphed in the $2 million winner-take-all, invitation-only world series of poker tournaments of champions. She retired from the game in 2012. She is also the author of multiple wonderful books, including Thinking In Bets and How We Decide and her latest being “Quit – The Power of Knowing When To Walk Away”. 

In Quit, Annie draws on stories from a wide swath of high achievers, including elite mountain climbers, business leaders, and entertainers, to argue that quitting is a good thing when applied at the right time. And much like a poker career, life, she says, is one long game and the biggest winners are also the most strategic quitters. Charlie Munger on Inflation, Envy, and Why Investing is Going to Get Harder

In an interview recently, Charlie Munger warned about the biggest inflationary bubble in world history bursting and shared his thoughts on how it is going to unfold. He elaborated on the difficulty of building wealth for the young generation of today compared to his. Charlie said that we’re flirting with serious trouble and the consequences may be worse than what Paul Volcker was dealing with in the 1970s.

Saurabh Mukherjea is the Founder and CIO of Marcellus Investment Managers. Saurabh was educated at the London School of Economics where he earned a BSc in Economics with First class Honours and an MSC in Economics with distinction in Macro and Micro Economics. In London, Saurabh was the co-founder of Clear Capital and in 2007 he was rated by the EXTEL survey as one of the top small cap analyst in the UK, In India Saurabh was rated as a leading equity strategist in 2015-16-17 by the Asia money polls. Prior to setting up Marcellus, Saurabh was the CEO of Ambit Capital. He has written multiple best selling books that include Coffee Can Investing, The Unusual Billionaires, Gurus of Chaos, The Victory Project and his latest one which is Diamonds in the Dust.

[Transcript] The One Percent Show: Prof. Sanjay Bakshi

Professor Sanjay Bakshi is the Managing Partner at ValueQuest capital. He is one of India’s best recognized finance professors who taught security analysis, behavioral finance and business valuation at MBA Gurgaon for 20 years. And currently he’s distinguished adjunct professor at finance at FLAME University Pune. Prof. Bakshi received his MSc in Economics from London School of Economics in Political Science, and B.Com Honors from the University of Delhi. He’s also a fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

The American historian Henry Adams said, and I quote, “A teacher affects eternity. He can never tell where his influence stops.” Prof. Bakshi has been that teacher to 1000s of students over the past two decades, and I have also been fortunate, even if an indirect beneficiary of his teachings. And so asking questions to him today makes me the most nervous I have been on the show so far.

Ramesh Damani is a member of the Bombay Stock Exchange and one of the most successful investors in India. A proponent of the Buffett style of value investing, Mr. Damani is one of the most well-read and erudite investors I’ve known in India. He holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce from HR College in Mumbai, and a master’s degree in business administration from California State University. Charlie Munger has been quoted as saying, I constantly see people rise in life who are not the smartest, sometimes not even the most diligent, but they are learning machines. They go to bed every night a little wiser than they were when they got up and boy, does that help, particularly when you have a long run ahead of you. Mr. Damani is among the smartest investors India has seen. He’s also one of the most diligent and he is a learning machine. In fact, he’s a wizard par excellence of Dalal Street.

Rajiv Thakkar is the Chief Investment Officer and director at PPFAS Asset Management. Rajeev started his career in the investment banking business in 1994. Then moved to fixed income before landing in the equity space at PPFAS, where he has been working for the last 20 plus years. He is a chartered accountant, cost accountant and CFA charter holder. Rajiv is a strong believer in the School of value investing, and is heavily influenced by Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger is approach. I have known him for the past eight years, and apart from his investing insights, I look up to him for his calm demeanour and meditative approach, which though is unusual for money managers of his stature, but looks normal, given the school of thought he comes from, which is value investing.

Vinod Sethi served as Managing Director of Morgan Stanley Investment Management, until February 2001 and served as its Chief Investment Officer and Portfolio Manager for 12 years. He is a graduate in Chemical Engineering and holds a degree in B. Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai and an MBA in Finance from Stern School of Business, New York University.

Vinod has maintained a low public profile all these years, but he is a veteran in the Indian equity investment space with an experience of more than three decades. The little I have read and known about him, I find a man who has not been just a multidisciplinary thinker but also a true Karmayogi who has combined his inner voice at a number of times with mindful decisions and rightful efforts.

When I was studying about Vinod’s life and experience, I could remember a 1910 speech delivered by the former US President, Theodore Roosevelt and which was titled The Man in the Arena. Roosevelt said and I quote, “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.”
