Value Investing, the Sanjay Bakshi Way 2.0

After much delay due to issues in fixing a mutually convenient date, my interview of Prof. Sanjay Bakshi is going to happen soon.

Just to give a background, Prof. Bakshi is one of the best minds in India in the fields of Value Investing and Behavioral Finance.

He teaches MBA students (at MDI Gurgaon) two popular courses: “Behavioral Finance & Business Valuation” and “Financial Shenanigans & Governance”. He is also a Managing Partner at ValueQuest Capital LLP — a value investing specialist in moats investing.

Intrinsic Value: A Big Deal?

Here is an email I received from a tribesman yesterday…

I agree that evaluating and buying great businesses at the correct price (i.e. prices below the intrinsic value) is of utmost importance.

However, while I think I am getting better in evaluating the growth of businesses, their durable moats and creating my own check list of investing, my biggest challenge is in calculating the range of the “intrinsic value”.

I am still not able to calculate the risk associated with the stock and that is prohibiting me from confidently buying a stock which I believe is a value buy.

May I request you to please share any pointers, books, frameworks which can help me estimate the risk and/or this intrinsic value?

I believe this – calculating intrinsic value – is one big issue most investors face, and thus I thought of replying to this email via a post.

Well, the concept of intrinsic value is indeed tricky.

Unlike the first impression of it being an “Internet or dotcom” business, look deeper and you will see a “media” business (classifieds) that is on the Internet.

Do You Own the Stock or Does The Stock Own You?

That successful investing is more a matter of a strong heart than a strong mind is something I have repeated innumerable times on Safal Niveshak.

Of course, succeeding as an investor requires a strong mind – the ability to study and identify the good and great businesses while avoiding the gruesome.

An Excel to Save Your Life

Tata Motors: Will You Play Devil’s Advocate for Me?

Rolf Dobelli wrote this in The Art of Thinking Clearly…

Have you ever bitten your tongue in a meeting? Surely. You sit there, say nothing and nod along to proposals. After all, you don’t want to be the (eternal) naysayer. Moreover, you might not be 100% sure why you disagree, whereas the others are unanimous – and far from stupid. So you keep your mouth shut for another day.

When everyone thinks and acts like this, groupthink is at work: this is where a group of smart people makes reckless decisions because everyone aligns their opinions with the supposed consensus. Thus, motions are passed that each individual group member would have rejected if no peer pressure had been involved.

Nowhere do you see groupthink than in the world of business and investing.

Whether it’s the case of a CEO allocating capital, or an investor doing so, it’s easy to fall into groupthink and allocate precious cash on things that “seem” right because others also think so, rather than those that “are” right.

Launching StockTalk 3.0

I am writing this in the month of January, so this is not an April Fool’s joke. 🙂

I am planning to re-launch the StockTalk initiative, and in a new avatar (again!).

If you have been a reader of Safal Niveshak for long, you know that I launched the original StockTalk initiative in November 2011.
